TGIF

I look tired in this pic and the truth is, I am. It was the kind of day I just wanted to stay curled up under the covers and not have to brave dipping temperatures outside. Lacking inspiration, I just tried to pull together some layers.

What: skinny jeans, tank, sweater, cardigan, necklace

Where: the office

Why: I felt drawn to skinny jeans and then sought some top layers to go with them. I realize a lot of my tops are too short to wear with skinny jeans or leggings, perhaps I can still snag some longer sweaters on sale. There is still some serious winter left in this part of the world!

Pink and brown

Pink and brown is not a new colour combo and some would say that it is better suited to a little girl’s bedroom or a scrapbooking page, but I like it and just felt like wearing it today.

What: modern harem pants, t-shirt, cardigan, belt, ballet flats, necklace, bangles

Where: yoga & work

Why: I like to wear capris for yoga so you can really see the alignment in a pose, but in this weather you can’t just go outside with bare calves. So to save time and avoid having to change at the studio before class I sometimes layer them under these modern harem pants (I love how they balloon at the ankle). I get to appear fashionable coming and going and only have to visit the change room once!

Girls night out

Our schedules were packed, but we were determined to get a girls night out, so we squeezed in dessert after I finished leading the Ash Wednesday worship service. Three molten chocolate souffles and several rounds of delightful convo later and our fix was satiated!

What: LBD, embellished top, stockings, boots, earrings, bangle

Where: dessert with my two best girl pals

Why: I was heading straight to dessert from work, so I tucked this top in my bag and swapped out the clergy shirt before leaving the church. The rest of the ensemble did double duty, once again proving that faith and fashion need not be mutually exclusive.

Shrove Tuesday

Today is Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday, or Shrove Tuesday. It’s generally meant to be a fun day and tradition in my parish is to have pancakes for supper. And so in the spirit of fun I was wondering if I could pull off an outfit inspired by the colours of Mardi Gras – purple, green and gold.

What: gold pants, green sweater, purple jacket, gold necklace & earrings

Where: Shrove Tuesday pancake supper

Why: I didn’t have enough jewel tone pieces to pull off the three colours in those, so I opted for earthy tones and think this came together well. It’s subtle, no one said “oh my, you have dressed in the colours of Mardi Gras!” but I got to walk around with a smile all day thinking about my little project 🙂

Rock n’ Roll

Some months ago my husband bought tickets to a concert by one of his favourite bands from his youth. They were a real 70’s sensation and tonight we are off to see them perform right here in our own city.

What: skirt, crew neck sweater, leather jacket, boots, stockings, necklace, earrings, bangles

Where: concert

Why: I have been on the hunt for a pair of knee high black boots and had success at Nine West (thanks Lori, you were fab!) this past week, just in time for a fun night out.

Sweater on sweater

I typically layer a cardigan over a lighter piece like a t-shirt or shell because I like the clean lines that creates. However, today I was inspired by some reading I have done on a fellow blogger’s site to try mixing clothes you already have in different ways. So I have never put this sweater under a cardigan, but today I did and I think it works!

What: skinny jeans, cashmere turtleneck, cardigan, riding boots, necklace, earrings

Where: lunch out with my boys and grocery shopping

Why: I wanted something comfy and warm and mixed up in a different way.

Colour blocking

Everywhere I look these days it seems colour blocking is standing out. I’m hoping to jump on this trend with a pair of bright skinnies for spring, but in the meantime I am working with what I’ve got. It started with the black pants, and I just went from there. I don’t have tonnes of clothes in bold shades of similar intensity which is what really makes colour blocking work, so I stuck with a black base and added colour with accessories.

What: fine wale cords, pinstripe turtleneck, cardigan, scarf, ballet flats, bangles

Where: the office

Why: Three colours are supposedly the magic number (though sometimes you can pull off four) and because a bit of colour breaks through on a winter day!

Winging away…

Today we are winging our way to sunny Mexico for a 10-day family getaway! There’s always a trick to dressing for a flight that departs from below freezing temperatures and arrives in intense heat, but I found the perfect combo in this outfit. (And the highlight of the day was having the flight attendant stop by my seat to say how much he and his colleague LOVED my shoes!)

What: cotton pant, tank, cardigan, sandals, (pedicure), necklace, earrings, bangles, handbag

Where: airport, flight, sunny destination

Why: I love that these cotton pants are convertible with a cute cuff and buttoned loop. I didn’t need to make them longer on the flight to preserve body heat, but it was nice to know that was an option. And layers were great, I could keep on the cardigan (which was a perfect match for the pedicure peeking out from my sandals) while in transit and stuff it in my handbag upon arrival. I added this luxe-looking jewellery to finish the look. One might be advised to avoid so much metal when dealing with airport scanners, but taking it off through security was a small price to pay for how it complemented the outfit for the rest of the day.

Packing…

Today’s outfit was purely functional. It was a day dedicated to pre-vacation errands, planning outfits for the next 10 days, doing laundry and then doing it all over again for my little guy. Thank goodness my husband can do his own packing, this is exhausting!

What: fine wale cords, long-sleeve t-shirt, flats

Where: packing, packing, packing

Why: I wanted to wear something I was not taking on my vacation and while I was after function, I just adore this Cirque du Soleil shirt. Yes, it is a t-shirt, but I like how they have pieced together interesting fabrics and how the collar is asymmetrical and folds down.

Glam cozy?

Note to self: take your daily picture at the beginning of the day. For the sparkle of my personality has definitely faded by the time this late evening pic was taken. However, this is a daily blog, so I’m keeping up with the daily part of it.

What: herringbone tweed pants, v-neck sweater, cable knit sweater, metallic pumps, earrings, bangles

Where: the office

Why: winter will soon be whisked into the background for 10 days, so I thought I should cozy up while I can. It’s a glam cozy – sequins and metallic platform pumps!
